Pedestrian Protection Effort
Change in impact energy-absorbing structures
Pedestrians accounted for 16% of the fatal and serious injuries sustained in accidents involving Nissan vehicles in 2003. There is a need to adopt further measures to help reduce that figure. Nissan has set a goal of reducing the number of fatal and serious injuries in traffic accidents involving Nissan vehicles to one-half of 1995's level by 2015. Pedestrian protection is positioned as an important factor in the attainment of that goal. Nissan has been developing technologies to help reduce not only head injuries but also leg injuries. The test results of head impact tests in Japan's New Car Assessment Program (JNCAP) have been published since March 2004, and a head protection regulation will become effective in September 2005. These are indications of the rising concern about pedestrian protection and Nissan continuing its efforts to address this area.
