The inspirational challenge
driving our ideas
Nissan founder Yoshisuke Aikawa famously said, “Dare to do what others don't."
His challenge is what drives the imaginations of Nissan engineers to this day.
Their ideas are the fruit of a relentless pursuit of engineering knowledge and
technical expertise combined with unbound imagination and a sharp focus on
creating new value.
New ideas can become powerful currents that enrich our daily lives and
revolutionize the world.
Our ideas for the future focus on hope and positivity.

Nissan's ideas are woven with the philosophy of bricolage
"Bricolage" is a French word meaning "something constructed or created from a diverse range of things" or "bringing diverse things together from which to create something." It represents the philosophy of creating new value by skillfully combining familiar objects and ideas to innovative effect. Tetsuro Ueda, an expert leader at Yokohama Lab in Nissan Research Center, embraces this approach to innovation — although at first glance it may seem incongruous to the manufacturing industry's pursuit of mass production efficiency above all.
Addressing his method of merging Nissan's cutting-edge technology with the philosophy of bricolage, Ueda says, "We live in times when technology is making exponential leaps and bounds. This is precisely why we should tap into our animal instincts and leverage our inherited powers of observation and creativity. This is how we can weave new patterns of surprising experiences out of things we already have." He continuously creates innovations that lead to a sustainable future addressing his method of merging Nissan's cutting-edge technology with the philosophy of bricolage.
The leading example of that is the Contemporary Lifestyle Vehicle (CLV). Rather than pursuing an optimal solution to meet a technological goal, he explored ways to creatively combine existing tools, materials and concepts which he brought together with AI, his particular field of expertise.
The challenge was to create value for drivers and passengers that would exceed expectations. The resulting CLV can be described as a prototype sedan brimming with innovations of all kinds that truly embodies the essence of bricolage.
