Nissan cool paint technology (Thermal metamaterial)
An innovative paint that lowers vehicle cabin temperatures in summer
Incorporating metamaterial, synthetic composite materials with structures that exhibit properties not usually found in nature, Nissan’s cool paint reduces the transfer of heat onto surfaces such as the roof, hood and panels and delivers a cooler interior.
How it works
Under the heat of the sun, the molecules within traditional automotive paint vibrate and generate heat.
Nissan’s cool paint however, features metamaterial with two microstructure particles. The first, reflects near-infrared rays in the sunlight, and the second particle enables the real breakthrough.
It creates electromagnetic waves, that counteract the sun's rays, redirecting the energy through the atmosphere towards space.
The benefit is particularly noticeable when a vehicle is parked in the sun for an extended period. A cooler interior is not only more pleasant to enter, but it also reduces the requirement to run the air-conditioning and add load to either the engine, or in the case of an electric vehicle, draw on the battery.
While still in the trial stage, field testing conducted in August 2024 at Tokyo International Air Terminal in Japan, demonstrated that Nissan’s cool paint can deliver up to 12 degrees Celsius (53.6 degrees Fahrenheit) cooler exterior surfaces and reduce cabin temperatures by 5 degrees Celsius (41 degrees Fahrenheit) compared to traditional automotive paint.
The technology is part of Nissan’s wide-ranging effort to empower journeys and create a cleaner more sustainable society.
