Jury selects Nissan Art Award 2013 finalists

The first round jury for the Nissan Art Award 2013 met in Venice, Italy at the end of May 2013. Five jurors, globally active art experts, considered the nominations and selected eight artists as finalists. The several dozen artists under consideration had previously been nominated by a separate candidate nomination committee comprising five curators and art critics.

"The jury meeting in Venice was very exciting," said Fumio Nanjo, Director of the Mori Art Museum and chair of the jury. "We were considering artists who had been nominated by the very knowledgeable nomination committee. Each of the artists has his or her own original style, and together they represent the leading edge of Japanese artists today. Their art creates dialogs or builds links with the viewer, or stimulates thinking through continual transformation. It felt as though we had a mirror onto the current state of Japanese art. Our task was to select the finalists who go on to produce new artworks. One of them will eventually rise up to claim the award. For us jurors, watching that process is a rare and wonderful experience."

The eight artists selected as finalists will exhibit their new work at BankART Studio NYK in Yokohama City in September. The jury will then meet again for a final round to decide the winner of the Nissan Art Award 2013 grand prize.
