Safety Shield by Cooperative ITS

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has been an active participant in the USDOT's Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) program since 2005 and engages in research and development of systems based on short range communication (DSRC) technology between Road Side Equipment (RSE) and other vehicles, and GPS assisted high accuracy vehicle positioning technology.
The Vehicle equipped with the GPS receiver and On Board Equipment (OBE) recognizes high accuracy map information and proximate vehicle positions, and receives traffic signal information when approaching to intersections.
Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. is enhancing the technology development to inform the driver and control the vehicle to cotribute traffic safety based on the information provided by the Cooperative ITS System.

System Function

Signal Violation Warning

The system issues warnings when the driver is approaching a red light without braking. The warning is generated from signal phase and the distance to intersection on the travel lane.

Cross Traffic Notification

The system issues the crossing traffic information when the driver is approaching to the non-signalized intersections.



Oncoming Traffic Notification

The system issues the oncoming vehicle information when the driver is making left turn.

Cooperative ICC

The system automatically stops the vehicle at the stop line when the driver is appoaching the intersection by using ICC during the red light phase on the travel lane.

Vehicle Positioning Technology

A combination of vehicle coordinate information by GPS and high definition map information from RSE enables to position the vehicle within 1 meter accuracy. This technology constantly monitors the distance to the stop line and the travel lane.

Traffic Signal information Reception

RSE transmits signal phase and time to next phase for each lane. OBE receives the information and identifies the proper signal phase for the travel lane.

Proximate Vehicle Detection

OBE enables vehicle to vehicle communication to detect the positions and velocity of proximate vehicles
