Born in Toyama Prefecture in 1977, Yuichiro Tamura resides in Shizuoka Predecture. He graduated from the photography faculty of Nihon University and then completed a doctoral program at the Graduate School of Film and New Media, Tokyo University of the Arts. In 2012, he studied at the Institut für Raumexperimente at Berlin University of the Arts on the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ Program of Overseas Study for Upcoming Artists. He samples existing images or his own photographic materials to compose new landscapes and narratives that transcend time and space by eliciting and reconstructing original relationships. His road movie NIGHT LESS, created only with images from Google Street View, won an Excellence Prize at the Art Division of the 14th Japan Media Arts Festival (2011) and has been screened around the world, including at the 3rd Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions (Tokyo, 2012) and the 57th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen (2011). Recent major exhibitions include “2 or 3 Tigers” (Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, 2017), “Mode of Liaison” (Bangkok Art & Culture Centre, 2017), “BODY/PLAY/POLITICS” (Yokohama Museum of Art, 2016), Kyoto Experiment 2016, “Form of Narrative” (Sendai Mediatheque, 2015), Mediacity Seoul 2014 (Seoul Museum of Art), “Photography Will Be” (Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, Nagoya, 2014), and “MOT Annual 2012: Making Situations, Editing Landscapes” (Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo). Upcoming projects include a solo exhibition at Kurumaya Museum of Art as well as exhibits at Yokohama Triennale 2017 and Hamburger Bahnhof.
