Emergency Assist for Pedal Misapplication

Helps to prevent accidents caused by applying the wrong pedal

When the vehicle is parked or traveling at low speed (up to 15 km/h) and there is a wall, stopped vehicle, or other obstacle in the direction of travel, and under these conditions, the driver accidentally operates the accelerator pedal instead of the brake pedal or is late in braking; this system can help the driver prevent a collision by automatically suppressing acceleration and by applying the brakes.
Regarding wall detection, the system can detect glass surfaces, such as the glass walls of a convenience store in addition to typical wall structures. Wall detection operates both when driving forward and reversing.
In addition to the above function, some models such as LEAF provide assistance for preventing collisions when there is a vehicle, pedestrian, or other obstacle in front of the vehicle and the driver operates the wrong pedal at speeds of up to 25 km/h.

System operation

Sonar installed in the front and rear bumpers detects walls, vehicles, and other obstacles around the vehicle in the direction of travel. If the accelerator pedal is depressed strongly while an obstacle is detected, the system warns the driver with a display alert and warning sound, and suppresses the vehicle from accelerating.
If the system judges that there is the risk of a collision, it warns the driver with a screen display and warning sound, and automatically applies the brakes in order to help prevent a collision. In addition to the above function, some models such as LEAF uses the front camera to detect vehicles and pedestrians in front of the vehicle. When there is an object detected, the system activates in the same way as pedal misapplication in traveling at speeds of up to 25km/h.

System mechanism

Sonar detects the presence of an obstacle in the direction of travel and the distance to the obstacle. When the system judges that there is the risk of a collision, it warns the driver while also reducing engine or motor output and applies braking force.
With some models such as LEAF, in addition to sonar, the system also uses information from the front camera. This allows detection of vehicles and pedestrians at greater distances and can help prevent collisions caused by pedal misapplication at speeds of up to 25 km/h.
