Production of passenger cars was restricted by GHQ after WW2, but GHQ lifted the ban in 1949. Nissan entered a technology partnership with Austin Motor Co. Ltd. of UK in 1952. Austin was chosen because it was skilled at developing smallsize cars and was predominant in the US market at that time.
Job-1 car of "A40 Somerset Saloon" by Nissan came off the line at the Austin factory in Yokohama in April 1953, and the release exhibition was held on 8th May with Minister of International Trade and Industry and British Ambassador to Japan among guests.
This car is the genuine car of No.1 off the line. The partnership between Nissan and Austin continued until 1959.
